Comienzo de la actividad
METALES PELAZ, started trading in Bilbao back in 1.946. The business was set up by the Pelaz family who had come to live in Bilbao from their home town in Palencia.
They located in a small unit in the old part of the city.
EThe eldest son, Emilio, started buying scrap and kept it at the side of the family owned café bar. They soon left the café business and started working full time in scrap.
These were hard times, in every way, but necessity, (as always), and the enthusiasm of the family helped the concern to prosper.arra.
Improvement of the activity and production
Little by little they invested in new warehousing, vans and trucks, as well as everything else necessary for the improvement and efficiency of the venture.
In 1.965 they made a big decision. They abandoned the units in the old part of town and moved to land on the outskirts of the city, near the airport.
They had a large warehouse built which has been modified and developed over the years to become the present day site of Metales Pelaz.
In that time Emilio and Andres, lead the company, until in 1984 Emilio takes the command of the company, who rule the company with illusion, strength and looking forward the prosperity until 2013 when at his 83 years, he get retired and left the command of the company to his beloved son and daughter Iñaki y Amaia, who leads the company with the same strength and enthusiasm.
Today Metales Pelaz is still a family owned company, employing 25 people, which as always looks to the future while at the same time placing importance on quality and customer service.
Floods August 26th 1983
Throughout its years of business, the company has had to overcome all kinds of difficulties: unpaid bills, robberies, a fire, the collapse of a roof etc, but one of the most serious, due to the extent of the damage and the time dedicated to repairs, were the floods which took place on August 26th 1983.
By the afternoon of that day the buildings were sitting in a metre of water. As the company was closed for the holidays, it wasn’t until the following morning that the company owner, Emilio Pelaz, together with the securitiy guards and a relative of his, arrived to try and save important documents. While they were on the premises, the level of the water began to rise until, in the end, it reached a height of four metres.
The staff had to take refuge in the office on the 2nd floor and stand on tables and chairs in order to escape the water.
