Tin is a silvery, malleable metal that does not rust easily and is resistant to corrosion. It is found in many alloys and is used to coat other metals protecting them from corrosion.

Tin has been known since ancient times and is already mentioned in the OldTestament. In Mesopotamia we apons were already made of bronze (alloy ofcopper and tin). The Romans also covered the inside of copper containers with tin.

Tin-based alloys, also known as whitemetals, generally contain copper, antimony and lead. These alloys have different mechanical properties, depending on their composition. Some tin, copper and antimony alloys are used as anti-friction materials in bearings due totheir low shear strength and reduced adhesion.
