Zinc (from the German Zink, also known as zinc in Spanish) is an essential chemical element of atomic number 30 and Zn, symbol. The richest mines contain 10% iron and around 50% zinc. The minerals from which zinc is extracted are: zinc sulphide known as blende in Europe; zinc carbonate known as calamine in Europe; hemimorphite (silicate) and franklinite(oxide).

The level at which zinc is recycled has increased, while the technology used in its production continues to advance. Currently, 90% of the zinc available for recycling is recycled, obtaining around 600 tons of zinc scrap, only from recycled brass. Zinc from zinc-protected steel scrap is also increasing.
